In 1960, the first undersea park in the country was established at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Later, these 70 nautical square miles were combined with surrounding land. You will find mangrove swamps and tropical hammocks, sandy beaches and hiking/nature trails. Explore the coral reef from the safety of a glass-bottom boat, or be more adventurous and scuba dive or snorkel to get up close. Board the Spirit of Pennekamp, a 65-foot catamaran, for either method of seeing the wildlife and reefs of the park. You can also canoe or kayak on a 2.5 mile marked trail through the mangroves. The Visitor Center features a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, six smaller aquariums and shows nature videos in its theater.
